  7. What was the Japanese title of the show? Was it popular in Japan? I've tried searching for Japanese sites but haven't found anything
The Japanese title of the show was Saiyuki (sometimes spelt Saiyuuki). However, the best way to look for Japanese sites is to search using the Japanese characters for these names. However, be aware that this story is very popular in Japan - and searching for this name will yield results for other TV, film and book adaptations of the same story. Here's 2 links to Google Japan search results for Saiyuki: Most common form: http://images.google.com/images?q=%E8%A5%BF%E9%81%8A%E8%A8%98&hl=ja&lr=&ie=UTF-8&inlang=ja&sa=N&tab=wi Very rare style: http://images.google.com/images?q=%E8%A5%BF%E6%B8%B8%E8%A8%98&hl=ja&lr=&ie=UTF-8&inlang=ja&sa=N&tab=wi Notes ------ 1) Both these links are for Google Image searchs - to see web page results, click on the left-most "tab" underneath the Google graphic, to the left of the one that is highlight for Images results 2) Don't forget to go to the bottom of the results page, and click on the next link (or 2,3, 4, 5, etc) to see the next pages of results.

  8. I wonder if you are able to advise me on who to approach regarding the licensing of Monkey products. Any advice would be much appreciated.
I'm afraid that the Japanese companies who own the rights to Monkey - NTV and Kokusai Hoei - don't ever grant anyone the rights to produce official, licensed Monkey merchandise.

  9. Why did the series suddenly end ?
The answer to your question can be found on the Monkey Trivia page: "I spoke with a member of the then "Saiyuuki" staff and he told me that when the show was first pitched no one thought it work. However, the reality was that it was a huge success, garnering over 30% ratings. After the first 26 episodes were aired, a continuation of the story was planned, but this time with high expectations in light of the success of the first. However, that was not the case. The second 26 episodes did not do as well as the first and no plans were made for a third series. Also, by the time the first series and second series had aired, the actors became very popular and their schedules filled up quickly. Basically, they moved on with their careers. As for why the group never reached India, perhaps it was because the production group had planned to stretch it out for longer that they may have to gotten to that point in the second series, but because the ratings were not as good for the second series (less than 20%), it just never came to be. But the answer I received was that rather than the goal, the process, the adventure was most important -- fighting evil, helping the poor, etc."

  10. Did monkey first appear in the Water Margin before the series of Monkey?
The character of Monkey definitely didn't. The actor who played Monkey - Masaaki Sakai - didn't appear in The Water Margin as far as I know. Although I know that certainly other actors appeared in both series.

  11. Do I need to buy the right if I want to make monkey greetings cards?
As with all TV shows, yes you would need to get permission and acquire the rights to produce Monkey greeting cards. NTV (the company that made Monkey) does not generally give permission to anyone to produce any Monkey-related merchandise, e.g. greeting cards. However, if you wish to contact them, you could drop them an email from their web site: http://www.ntv.co.jp/english/index.html If you manage to get permission and your greeting cards go on sale, please let me know as I would like to promote them on http://www.monkeyheaven.com/

  14. Why did Monkey, a Japanese tv show, film its exteriors in China and not Japan?
Because the story is set in China. The Monkey TV show is based on a very old Chinese story called "Hsi Yu Chi" (in English "Journey To The West") which is set in China, and tells the story of a Buddhist pilgrim travelling from China to India. None of the story was set in Japan. So to be truly authentic, it made sense that none of the exterior scenes in the show should be filmed in Japan. To read more about the original story "Hsi Yu Chi", see the links to other web site on the Monkey Links - Hsi Yu Chi web page and also Monkey Books - Hsi Yu Chi / Journey To The West / Monkey King Literature
