Hmmm...well, I don't read lots of short stories. I usually read novels. But recently I read this charming short story by Patrick Samphire called Uncle Vernon's Lie. I enjoyed it so much I started using it in my classes. It is a magical realism sort of story about a little boy learning to face his his fears and the wonder that is all around us if we pay attention.
