The Band of Others Forum

(Wearing of togas is not mandatory.  Some concept of decorum, and good manners is requested.)

We don't intend to be a hardcase on the issue of censorship.  We encourage debate, and understand that it will sometimes become heated.  I do not want to lay down rules concerning what will be, and what will not be tolerated.  If I find something offensive, my inclination is to delete the thread rather than ban the individual.  However:  Gossip, and repeated rudeness, will not be tolerated.  In general this forum is open to any subject people wish to discuss.  Remember that this is primarily a military forum.  Any person, or persons, who try to "hijack" it for their own purposes will be banned.

As far as map reading is concerned it is required that both Tank Commanders and Gunners can read a map. A TC must undergo many hours of terrain map reading.

The Tanks all have manual Back up systems in case of power loss. The Turret has an aux hand crank in the gunners compartment allowing the turret to be traversed by hand, also a Telescope bore-sighted with the main gun complete with visible range numbers on the cross hairs,(The TC just has to estimate the range and the gunner does the rest) Rounds are not percussion fired but electronic, the gunner has what we called a "Master Blaster" a small hand spin generator that supplies the current to fire a round.

Although I went threw both Tank School and Tank Commanders School in the 60s the basic back-up systems haven't changed that much. Also in the three years I spent in Germany before RVN, We had ranges constructed just for fighting a Tank with Manual systems only.

I trained on M-60s which were equipped with a Ballistic computer linked to the optical Triangular Range Finder and manual round selector, now its all laser but still has a manual round selector.
