hmmm
This cottage is advertised as a second home for the owners and ...yes ....that's what it is. It is not in my opinion suitable for renting to others unless they have been going there for years or a re friends of the family. No bed linen available on arrival and peering at the brochure this is certainly not made clear (6 people read it independently of each other and none of us cottoned on that we had to take our own bed linen). Given that lots of people travel to the lakes by public transport I propose that it is a bit much to expect people to bring sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases when they are renting ...especially up all those stairs! To reach the property one has to first (if arriving by car) reverse up a very steep slip off the main Ambleside one way system. This takes you to the unloading area. Other people are allowed to park here, but you aren't. (they do provide a free permit for the car park down the road). Next go through an archway which is dripping with water from the hill above, climb 12 steep steps. Turn the corner and mount another few. You are now on the patio area . The entrance to the flat is in the far corner, near more water dripping down the wall. Go in, and there are more stairs to get you to the first landing. (I read in the guest book that there are 54 to get to the lounge altogether, from the road.). Once in there are only 3 more steps to get you into the dining/kitchen/lounge area. If you are seeking modern comfortable and well serviced apartment then THIS IS NOT FOR YOU. The bedrooms are tiny, the beds 80s pine. Bathroom has a pink suite- shower over the bath, grotty shower head and grouting in between the tiles - plus the fitting was broken. Lots of hot water though! The seating in the lounge was more designed for an elderly people's home than a good lounge around after a long walk, and as for the plaster eagle...........placed in the middle of the one enticing seat - the large window sill overlooking the high street and the fells. A comfy place to sit but the eagle looked so forbidding we weren't sure it was ok! The kitchen has lots of 70s plates and dishes, pans and cups.....mind your fingers in the overhead glasses cupboards!!! What it lacks is the casserole dishes to make a stew - only one had a lid. I had to juggle massively to cook for 5 meat eaters plus a veggie. Loads of weird frippery cut glass stuff, but not a lot of practical things........... ........Summing up after this wordy tirade. Very basic- lots of ornaments don't change that!! No modern kitchen equipment - you know, a coffee maker or something like that. there IS a microwave though. VIEWS - you can get these anywhere in the lakes, you don't need to see them through the lounge window or skylight (the crane got in the way anyway). When it gets warm the windows steam up ............. The airing cupboard is not as generous as indicated. There is loads of room on the landing for boots and coats. It's bang in the centre of Ambleside but access is rubbish and if you bring more than one car then it's expensive. ENOUGH!! If you like 70s decor and furnishings on a basic level then this is the place for you. |
