GB v Belarus
This report is dedicated to my former friend, Tony Allen. 15 April 2004, Jordal Amfi Arena, Oslo, Norway BELARUS-BRITAIN Scoring: 1-0 BLR Strakhau (Yesaulau) 7.11 2-0 BLR Kalyuzhny (Tsyplakov, Salei) pp 13.01 2-1 GB Clarke 24.07 3-1 BLR Skabelka (Antonenko, Stas) 28.03 4-1 BLR Tsyplakov (Kalyuzhny, Kastsitsyn) pp 31.03 4-2 GB Hoad ps 39.29 5-2 BLR Tsyplakov (Alekseev) sh 46.08 5-3 GB Moran (Myers, Thornton) pp 47.16 5-4 GB Phillips (Dixon, Shields) pp 56.25 Netminding: Mezin BLR 6-16-12 34 Watkins GB 17-18-12 47 Penalty minutes: Belarus 45 (Erkovich 5+game - cross-check), GB 45 (Pope match - fighting) Goals/powerplays: Belarus 2/9, GB 2/10 GB Man of Match: Hoad. Referee: Chris Savage CAN. Attendance: 693 Britain gave their best peformance of the tournament but it wasn't enough to beat the favourites. Nevertheless McSorley said he was proud of his team who showed great spirit in fighting back from 4-1 down at the mid-point. In fact, they came desperately close to equalising in the final minute after McSorley withdrew Watkins in favour of an extra forward, but Thornton's shot hit the post. As this was Britain's third game in four days, McSorley gave plenty of ice-time to his new caps, especially on defence where Britain have few experienced players. "I was pleased with them," he said. "They rose to the occasion." The game was marred by some puzzling refereeing decisions, one leading to the second Belorussian goal after 13 minutes. Defender Dixon was banished to the sin-bin for 'interference' when he slid helplessly into the keeper and Kalyuzhny scored on the resulting powerplay. Britain got more into the game as it went on, holding their own 2-2 in the middle period (Hoad converted a penalty shot awarded after he had been brought down) and winning the last 2-1, both powerplay goals. There was controversy in the 32nd minute when McSorley staged a protest walk-out after Erkovich struck Phillips with his stick. Incensed that the Belorussian received a lesser penalty than Britain's Pope who foolishly took retribution by punching Erkovich, McSorley retreated to the sidelines for ten minutes, telling the Canadian official: "If you're not going to do your job, I'm not going to do mine." |
