GB v Netherlands - not for the faint-hearted!
Brief report. More follows later. With several players missing due to injuries and suspension, Britain collapsed to a 4-1 defeat by the Netherlands in the World Championships (Div 1A) in Oslo, Norway. Playing their fourth game in five days, Britain's experienced players looked weary and coach Chris McSorley gave his younger players more ice-time. "We lack conditioning so some of the guys had little left in the tank," he said. "The kids provided the team's energy, especially in the final ten minutes." Britain were 4-0 behind with four minutes left when Paul Sample, 21 - one of eight new caps - scored his first goal in championship play, assisted by veteran Rob Wilson and Ryan Lake, 20, who is playing in his first senior championship. Britain's injury list lengthened when Steve Thornton, their leading scorer, injured his hip in the last period, ruling him out of Sunday's final game against sixth-placed Belgium. He joins forward David Longstaff (thumb) and defender Mike Ellis (leg) on the sidelines. Britain's defence is down to the bare bones with Paul Dixon (groin) doubtful for Sunday and Brent Pope still under suspension for punching a Belarussian in Thursday's game. |
