Prestigious appointment for former British Leaguer.

Babcock replaces Quenneville as Team Canada head coach

Team Canada GM Jim Nill tonight named Mike Babcock as head coach and Tom Renney as associate coach, an emergency move in reaction to the sudden illness of Joel Quenneville who was hospitalized late Friday night suffering from severe exhaustion. Quenneville has been released from hospital but is still too weak to go home, according to doctors.

Babcock led Canada to a gold medal at the 1997 World Junior Championship and more recently guided the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim to Game Seven of the Stanley Cup finals in the spring of 2003. Renney has been Head Coach of Canada at the 1994 Olympics and the World Championships in 1995, 1996, and 2000. He spent this past season as an assistant with the New York Rangers.

What the IIHF reporter forgot to mention (because he probably didn't know!) is that Mike Babcock played for Whitley Warriors in the Heineken British League, Premier Division, in 1987/88.

Babcock celebrates his 41st birthday next Thursday, 29 April.
