On the last day of the qualification round the Swiss beat the Germans 1-0 to eliminate the Germans and take 4th place in the Prague group. In the first quarter final, Sweden - Latvia the Swedes scored early on a powerplay, (2.38 Hoglund: Alfredsson, Nylander) second goal (shorthanded) at 15.42 (Alfredsson, unassisted) and a 5on3 powerplay led to a 3rd goal at 19.57 (Tarnstrom unassisted) to give them a 3-0 lead at the end of the first. Latvians were never going to come back from that, ended 4-1 Second quartefinal was a sell out, 17300, as Czechs met the USA. No scoring in the first period, Czechs led 1-0 at 23.15 (Skoula;Dopita) and a second goal on a powerplay at 26.04 (Jagr, unassisted) gave them a 2-0 lead and the crowd became confident. A US goal at 30.19 (Park; Cullen) saw the period end 2-1. Only goal in the third was a US goal at 51.01 (Westrum;Battaglia) and 60 minutes ended with game tied 2-2. No scoring in OT so it went to a penalty shoot out, only one goal scored (US) by Andy Roach on US final shot, Czechs had last shot but didn't score- and the crowd went home very quiet. During the game Czechs looked most likely to score on breakaways, but goalie Ty Conklin stopped most of them; US looked most dangerous setting up in front of goal. Roger
