Afternoon semi was Canada Slovakia (different from what I expected, probably because ESPN wanted the US game for American TV!) No score in the first period but Slovaks came out fast in the second to score at 20.10 (Satan from Strbak) but Biere pulled it back to 1-1 on a powerplay at 32.18 (Briere; Morris, Morrow). Canada went ahead at 46.10 on a controversial goal. Slovak goalie Lasak was behind the goal, Rob Niedermayer was skating behind goal and Lasak went down; Slovaks seemed to stop skating expecting a whistle, there wasn't one and the Canadians put the puck in the net (Horcroff; Staios). Lots of protests from Slovaks, crowd whistles, some empty bottles thrown onto the ice but the goal stood. (Replays show that there was contact with goalie). Ref tried to make it up by giving 3 powerplays to Slovaks in quick succession, Slovaks pulled goalie at 58.37 but it ended 2-1. Second game US Sweden. Sweden came out fast, scoring at 00.18 (Tarnstrom; Palsson) and another (powerplay) goal at 18.58 (Hoglund; Nylander, Axelsson) put Sweden in a comfort zone. Park (Hall,Westrum) pulled one back at 31.06 but Axelsson (Lidstrom) got an insurance goal just before the second break (39.44) . US pulled their goalie (Dunham) at 58.45 and got one back at 59.24 (Halpern; Drury) but it wasn't enough. Sweden 3 USA 2. Roger
