whitley warrior wins gold
Former Whitley Warrior Mike Babcock has won the world championship coaching the Canadian team. Sweden came out strong in the first period. A pp goal at 02.13 (Hoglund; Tarnstrom) and a second goal at 7.34 (Alfredsson; Forsberg) gave them a comfortable start. Rob Niedermayer got 2+10 for checking from behind at 10.25 as he clattered Forsberg into the boards. Ryan Smyth pulled one back for Canada at 13.58 (assisted Morrison). Sweden reestablished a 2 goal lead at 24.57 (Salomonsson; Hoglund, Nylander). Canada pulled the game back with two goals in quick succession Heatley; Bouwmeester, S. Niedermayer at 34.44 RNiedermayer; Horcroff at 35.36 and the momentum had definitely swung Canada's way. Quick out of the traps in the third period Bouwmeester; Heatley at 40.20 and Sweden's heads went down, fate was sealed by Canada's fifth goal Cooke; R.Niedermayer,Horcroff at 50.12. Sweden pulled their goalie at 57.28 but there was no further scoring, couple of empty net chances came close. That's all folks, I'm off to catch the last tram Roger |

Babcock's achievement is all the more remarkable when you remember that he only took over the coaching reins on the eve of the tournament when the appointed head coach, Joel Quenneville, was taken ill. Babcock had previously coached Canada's under-20s to the World Junior Championship in 1997. Last year, he took the unconsidered Anaheim Mighty Ducks all the way to game seven of the Stanley Cup Final. In the Final against Sweden, Canada recovered from a two-goal deficit for the third time in this year's tournament. They had trailed 0-2 before drawing 2-2 against Austria in a preliminary round game and 0-2 before defeating Finland 5-4 in the Semi-Final. This was the first time Canada had won back to back World Championships for 45 years and brought their total of World Championship Gold Medals to 19. |

Oops! Sorry, it was in the Quarter-Final (not the Semi) that Canada defeated Finland 5-4. |
