Presentation of Charles Knott Jr Hall of Fame certificate
On Friday 23 July 2004, during a buffet lunch at the Eastleigh Hampshire Fleming Park golf course club house, the Chairman of the BIHWA Hall of Fame sub-committee Stewart Roberts, with fellow committee member Martin C. Harris in attendance, presented to Mrs Iris Knott the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame certificate for her late husband Charles Knott Jr.in recognition of his services to the sport. 'C.J.' was a popular director of Southampton ice rink and manager of the successful Southampton Vikings from 1952-63, and a keen advocate for the home-grown player. Veteran Vikings John Cook,Kenny Flood,Tony Highmore, Derek Jordan, Stan Golding,Roy Saunders and Tony Whitehead were among the invited players able to be present. Others guests included Jo Farrow (who co-organised the event), for many years active in the supporters club, Gordon Wade (Honorary member of BIHWA) and statistician for the defunct Heineken sponsored British League and Superleague. Jim Knott brother of C.J., and the latter's daughter, and author of 'The Stadium Southampton' Chris. R. Bayley and several supporters from the days of ice hockey in Southampton also enjoyed the occasion. Scrapbooks, photos and programmes trigged many reminiscences. Unfortunately for posterity the photographer for the local 'Southampton Daily Echo' failed to keep his appointment. |
