Ice Hockey UK release their chief referee

Ice Hockey UK have released Simon Kirkham after only 21 months as their referee-in-chief. In a brief statement to BIHWA, the governing body said that the duties he undertook were largely duplicated by the chief referees of their 'partner organisations' - the Elite League, the BNL and the English IHA - and that his position had become superfluous.
Simon's primary duties were acting as liaison between the various leagues and working with the IIHF in licensing the UK's referees and linesmen internationally.
That's the news. My personal comment is that the 'partner organisations' had their own refs when Simon was appointed in October 2002, so the 'superfluous' reason for his sacking is obviously, er, superfluous.
What has changed since October 2002 is that the Elite League has replaced Superleague and they have shown great reluctance in paying fees to Ice Hockey UK. I understand that they were finally paid only the day before the big February meeting with the IIHF but I've yet to discover whether they've paid anything since.
