The Olympic withdrawal & the GB Supporters Club AGM
Andy Smith, the editor of the GBSC newsletter, thought members would be interested to hear what went on at the supporters AGM. These are strictly his own views, of course. The AGM was attended by Neville Moralee, the new chairman of Ice Hockey UK, and IHUK director, Bob Wilkinson of the English IHA. Neville Moralee took some flak from the floor. I don't think he started well. His 'potted history' turned into a 15-minute monologue on the history of north-east hockey 1954-2004! However, some of the stuff thrown at him was unjust and various parties had to calm down those getting hysterical about not going to the Olympics. I also thought it naive of some to ask him to commit himself to doing certain things which he is obviously in no position to do without the collaboration of other IHUK Board members. I've met Bob Wilkinson before at the Junior Championships in Hull and he came across as very constructive. I think one thing that was shown up is that GBSC isn't quite as well known or the financial 'brick' it is made out to be by some of its members - neither Bob nor Neville (nor Jo Abbs for the Women's team) had much idea about us before we kicked up the stink about the Olympics. I resisted countering various members' comments on the 'lack of IHUK foresight' re the Olympic decision. I could have pointed out that GBSC knew about the Olympics as far in advance as IHUK but didn't make their offer until the eleventh hour when it was all too late! Another anomaly I've noted: IHUK said: "Ice Hockey UK was forced, very reluctantly and after consultation with head coach Chris McSorley, members of the board of directors and Frederick Meredith (an International Ice Hockey Federation council member), to withdraw the team as we had no funding for this event." Neville Moralee told the AGM that: "IHUK [Neville and Stuart Robertson] did not go to the Prague Congress with the knowledge that withdrawal was possible. Another nation [at the Congress] asked if withdrawal was a possibility and were told it was. The IIHF then went round the room asking each nation in turn whether they were in or out. There was no time to consult." |
