Is this really the image of ice hockey we wish to promote?

Shrek Comes to London

TAKEN FROM LONDON RACERS' LATEST PRESS RELEASE.

"The Racers season is set to take flight this Friday and expect fists to fly. The Basingstoke Bison and their mammoth new forward Jeff “Shrek” Ewasko will be at Lee Valley Ice Centre when the puck drops at 8 PM. Racers tough guy Jeremy Cornish is sure to take this opportunity to drop his gloves for the first time at the Bike Shed and take on the monster Bison."

I think any further comment from me would be superfluous !

Ach, to be honest I'm not that bothered about it!

It might well attract some new spectators and I doubt whether it will put off many if any regulars.

I think some people get their knickers in a twist far too easily at that kind of thing sometimes.

I note it has been removed now anyway!

Ronnie:

I agree that fighting is part and parcel of our sport, when it breaks out spontaneously.

What I don't like is to see fighting used as a way of getting punters through the turnstiles. That press release virtually told you that a punch-up was guaranteed and I understand that one duly occurred in the third period.

If I had been a newbie attracted to the game by that message and a fight had NOT taken place, I would have felt fully justified in demanding a refund!

Yes, the release WAS duly amended, which I understand was largely due to the torrent of complants received by the Racers.
