World Championship - GB-Hungary 3-4
Britain failed to repeat their 2005 victory over the Hungarians, although they bravely recovered from 4-1 down and nearly equalised in the dying minutes. The inexperience of the young British side showed when they conceded two goals in two minutes early in the last period. Both came from unmarked attackers. Coach Rick Strachan said: "When we put the pressure on them we were fine but we got lazy, especially on defence." Britain, not unusually, also took a lot of penalties. They were short-handed four times in the first period alone and were lucky that the Hungarians capitalised only once. Groschl scored Hungary's opener while Mark Thomas was serving a minor for a clumsy bodycheck along the boards which the ref deemed to be elbows. It was decisions like these - against both sides - that led Strachan to quip: "They're callling the game so tight these days I was beginning to think we should have worn dresses". Matt Myers equalised shortly after the re-start while Hungary had a man in the bin. His wrister was perfectly timed to ensure that keeper Levente Szuper(man) was screened. Kovacs put Hungary ahead again and then came the fatal two minutes when Ocskay and Vas (on the powerplay)had all the time they needed against the undefended Stephen Murphy. But then Britain's youth triumphed. With their energy levels still high and their optimism undimmed, they fought back in the dying minutes and Jonathan Phillips and Colin Shields (both powerplays)ensured that the final scoreline more truly reflected the overall play. GB's Man of the Match: Matt Myers (your reporter rather liked Jonathan Phillips). More from Strachs: "This is a stepping stone for us. We have to learn how to win games like these. It was a big jump for some guys, even those on Elite League sides as they rarely get to play on the special teams." On France, GB's next opponents: "It'll be a fun game. As a player I always loved to play in front of a hostile home crowd." Note: Defender Adam Radmall (Hull) caught his skate in a rut during practice and injured his ankle. He is unlikely to play at least until the end of the week. The team is unable to replace him as there was not enough in the budget to bring out any reserves. Here's a link to my report on the BBC Sport website - typical subs are to blame for the "Rich Strachan" blunder http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/ice_hockey/4940650.stm And what's this about Jonathan Phillips then Stewart......?
