WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - GB-GER
Hello folks, Here's a link to my report on the game earlier today. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/ice_hockey/4952822.stm It should be noted that another member, Diane Davey, provided the picture for my report and more of her pictures from both the Germany game and GB's other games can be found here... www.photoboxgallery.com/ddimaging/2918745 cheers, Paul |

Hi folks, I've no idea why this didn't appear after the game. Some gremlin in the system. Coach Rick Strachan insisted on taking some positives from this game, saying that the last time the teams met - in 2000 in Katowice – an almost entirely British-Canadian GB was beaten 5-0 by the Germans. Now we have a promising young side (average age 24) with only one dual nat who can only learn from this experience. Murphy started the game in goal but, as Strachan admitted, he wasn’t ready and allowed a couple of soft goals in the first period. “He didn’t argue when I told him ‘that’s it’,” said the coach who put Lyle in for the rest of the game. For the first five minutes of the middle session, Germany bombarded the Welshman but he was a wall. GB gained a bit of confidence and gradually got back into the game. Britain never even took a penalty in the period until 18.44, but the Germans punished it with goal number five. Apart from three more German goals, the last period was notable only for six players (including four Brits) being thrown out in the last two minutes for hooking, holding and tripping offences, plus a misconduct to a frustrated Jonathan Phillips for arguing about it. This zero tolerance officiating is quite alien to Britain’s players as the sport’s authorities, almost alone among the ice hockey nations, has yet to introduce it in this country. Notes: This is the third time Britain have lost to Germany in the modern era (beginning in 1989). The last defeats came in 1999 and 2000. It's also the widest margin of defeat since GB were in Pool A in 1994. |
