GB-Japan 2-4
This was Britain’s most disappointing game of the tournament; they looked jaded after their fourth game in six days. Even the normally ebullient Strachan admitted his team weren’t up to the job. “The Japanese put pressure on our dee and they couldn’t handle it. Some of them panicked a bit.” That wasn’t how it looked at the start when Owen had an easy shot from six feet outside the right post after a crisp pass from Ellis. Though Japan, always dangerous in front of Lyle, scrambled one back moments later, Owen scored the best goal of the game just before the period ended. He carried the puck almost the length of the ice before slipping it to Ellis on his left who fired a high shot past Kikuchi from ten feet. But that was the end of GB’s scoring. The Japanese coach, Mark Mahon, who played for Solihull Barons in the early 1990s, said he “got mad at” his team in the first interval and “they responded by doing a good job in front of net and finding a way to win.” The Japanese were helped by a bad blunder from Leigh Jamieson which led directly to their third goal. “He wanted to play forward,” said Strachan. Perhaps that’s where he should have been as the young Belfast Giant had been playing forward all season in Northern Ireland. GB also had barely a shot on net during a five-on-three advantage during the last period. Strachan described GB’s powerplay as “terrible” and that they were missing Ashley Tait. “I don’t quite know why but when he was on the powerplay, it worked.” Summing up Britain’s performance in the tournament so far, Strachan said that apart from Lyle, their best senior players had not shown up. “Game in, game out our best performers have been [Matt] Myers, Jonathan Phillips and David Phillips,” he said. Japan outshot GB 43-19 and Lyle was voted man of the match. Notes: This was the third time in three games that Japan have beaten Britain, who last won in 1993. Sunday’s game against Israel will decide who goes down to Div II, the same situation as last year when GB beat China 10-0 in their final game. A similar scoreline is expected against the Israelis who had conceded 26 goals after three games. |
