World Championships - Britain-Israel 12-0
At last, after four straight defeats, Britain won their final game of the tournament - and by the widest margin since their 14-0 defeat of China in 1993. In what was effectively a game to see who would avoid relegation, Matt Myers scored four and Colin Shields three to help GB finish fifth in the six-nation tournament. Stevie Lyle enjoyed his first shut-out of the week though he faced only 13 shots. GB poured 46 shots on the Israelis who replaced their netminder in the last period. Coach Rick Strachan was disappointed at not achieving better results than last year when Britain finished fourth. He believed the programme was on the right track by using home-grown, mostly young players but acknowledged that it would be a long haul. “We’re still some players away from moving up,” he said. “There’s a huge jump between pools. Five years is a realistic goal.” Note - The coach of the Israeli team is French-Canadian Jean Peron who took the Montreal Canadiens to the Stanley Cup in 1986. |
