Brad waited outside the diner for her, despite the high humidity and coolness of the night. They found a corner booth, ordered dessert and resumed their conversation.
“Do you believe in love at first sight?” Whitney threw the opening gambit. Why dance around the issue at this point?
“Yes. Do you?”
“Yes. Have you experienced love at first sight?”
“I thought I had, but now I know I was wrong.”
Whitney pouted. “How so?”
“I hadn’t met you.”
Oh. Very nice. Promising, even. She couldn’t help the hot blush creeping across her cheeks. Brad reached across the table with his free hand, placing it over hers.
Electricity sparked where their flesh met. The simple gesture enveloped her like an intimate hug.
“I’ve always thought you couldn’t know a person well until they’d shared their most embarrassing moment,” Brad said. “I’ll share mine if you share yours.”
“Oh, my. Well, I’ve had so many, it’s hard to pick the number one event. Lessee here...Oh. I know. The time when I was seventeen and dating Andy. We both had braces, you see. Well, we were making out on my front porch when our braces locked together.”
Whitney shook her head, her eyes rolled heavenwards as she remembered the incident. “My sisters razzed me unmercifully for months, and my mother lectured me on how I’d get a reputation for being easy and was that something I really wanted?”
“You got unstuck, I presume?”
“Yes. Dad helped. Told me everyday until those braces came off that people with braces shouldn’t get in each other’s faces.”
