Excerpt from *Learning to Trust* by Laura Hamby A *Blue Plate Special: Pops' Girl* novel (c) 2006
Cool water sluiced over Janie’s sticky skin, washing away the diner odor. Janie poured a healthy dollop of citrus scented shampoo into her hand. The tangy aroma invigorated her. She closed her eyes when she tilted her head back to rinse the suds from her hair.
How she could be so relaxed and excited about this date with Myles, she didn’t know, but she took it as a good omen. Perhaps it was finally her turn to find happiness. She hoped so. Myles stood out against the examples her father and Dwayne had given her about men.
She still harbored a few doubts, which she firmly decided to ignore in favor of savoring every nuance of excitement about her date. Whatever hidden faults he had couldn’t be that bad. After all, everyone in town had told her how wonderful he was. She was well on her way to believing them.
The shimmery body wash left sparkles on Janie’s skin that not even a thorough drying rub would remove. The light cologne she used also left glitteries all over.
Feeling daring, Janie pulled a pair of patterned capris to wear. The bright pink, orange, yellow and white made large plaid-like squares all over. She loved these pants. The bright colors seemed so cheerful to her– irresistible. Much different than the rest of her rather drab wardrobe.
Topped with a matching solid orange shirt and hot orange sandals, followed by a tasteful pair of gold hoop earrings, Janie finished dressing. She stood before the full-length mirror, giving herself a serious last-minute inspection.
A series of knocks on her front door ended her critical assessment. She grabbed her purse off the foot of the bed.
Myles’ gaze lingered over her when she answered the door. Flustered, she opened the purse to check for her lipstick. A plastic-wrapped condom fell to the floor. Myles picked it up, grinned at her, and stuffed it into his back pocket.
“You’re prepared.”
Janie coughed. “Uh, well, Katie put those in my purse. She thought she was being funny.”
“Not funny. Helpful.” Myles offered her an arm. “Are you ready?”
That had to be a trick question. Of course she was ready. More than ready.
“Nice pants,” Myles told her. “I like orange on you. Makes you look happy.”
“It does?” That went a long way to buoy her spirits.
“I like how they fit across your butt.” Myles growled.
Janie waited while he made a big show of opening the car door for her. She laughed at his comment. “You pig.”
Myles tapped her backside when she stooped to get into the car. A love tap, followed by a bold caress. She almost lost her balance and fell face first into the vehicle.
“So you have plans for later tonight?” he asked her. His husky voice roughened with the same the desire that glimmered in his eyes.
“Maybe. What are your plans?” Janie twisted the strap of her purse between her sweaty palms.
“Very intimate.”
“Oh yeah?” Janie’s toes tingled This effect Myles had on her was new to her. Just the sound of his voice, the way he spoke, titillated her. With his simple touch and comment, Janie hungered for more. She had to satisfy this odd yearning he’d stoked within her.
