Time Out Mumbai-1st July '05

Jazz Junction

When Colin "Bassman" D'Cruz and drummer Lester Godinho got together to form Jazz Junction in Panjim in April 2004, they were only formalising a rhythmic relationship they'd shared for fifteen years. They had both gigged together as members of various Mumbai jazz outfits, and when D'Cruz decided to start spending more time in Goa, where Godinho had already shifted base, it seemed natural for them to seek each other out.
"A solid rhythm section is the foundation of any jazz group," noted D'Cruz. "That's why Jazz Junction is so tight." The duo are the hub of a constantly shifting line-up of old timers and new players who perform under the Jazz Junction banner. Many of their concerts are held at old Portuguese-style mansions as part of a series called Heritage Jazz. The series, says Godinho, "highlights those beautiful old places while also giving musicians a venue to perfom."
Keeping D'Cruz and Godinho company will be veteran pianist George Fernandez and vocalist Sharon Rodrigues, daughter of saxophone maestro Braz Gonsalves. Jazz Junction has a wide repertoire of standards, though they have a marked fondness for bossanova and other Latin rhythms. If we're lucky, they'll play some of the jazz soaked Konkani folk tunes that have earned them great popularity in Goa.
