Carlos Gonsalves-the wonder percussionist

Carlos Gonsalves, the young lad from Mapusa, had the right initiation, while grooming into adulthood, with the percussions which he assuaged his fanatical obssesion with pots and pans much to the chagrin of his near deafened family members who were in a dillema of questionable kind. Nevertheless, the road to stardom is replete with thorns and the great green giant which makes hard edeavour very often seems to be futile and daunting. Undetered while in his teens, Carlos took the solace of his friendship with the drummer Raul de Souza (Raul Sound) who guided him through the track of his musicial proclivities supported with notations and other basics of musicology. Thus brimming with his mates Trevor, Julio, Avito and Clyde, launched their music combo Deep Red to belt mostly pop music.
It is to be noted that in those days the fusion and progressive music has a little scope or no scope at all amoung the aficionados.
The India famed Lester Godinho (drums) and Colin D'Cruz (bass)gave Carlos the break in the big scene when they persuaded him to join their latin ensemble Obligato. With Obligato Carlos met with opportunities to travel extensively all over India which further enriched his musical experience. While with Obligato, Carlos freelanced with notables, Joe Pereira, to name a few, besides performing with other local artistes.
With an itch to travel to expand his musicial horizons, carlos moved ot Ireland where he obtained a regular morning route to sustain himself while in the evenings he revelled in Irish folk music. During his sojourn in the land of the leprechauns Carlos conducted several workshops for the Irish to be cognizant with various Indian percussion instruments while at tandem he learnt to blay 'Barron' (duff) a traditional Irish percussion instrument. However to be at par with the conventional and progressive music, Carlos performed with denis roland, a fabulous Irish jazz exponent.
Back in Goa, with an impetus ascertainred-it is not that Irish luck did not rub on him but the cold weather did- Carlos performed with Indian luminaries like Gopalnath Kadri, S. Harikumar, R. Balachandra, Sivamani and others, to project the goans inimitable proficiency in music. while jamming up with various goan artistes like Herman D'Abreu, sigmund D'souza and others. Carlos' ambition lies in trying to master Carnatic music which he finds percussionally endearing. so lets hope that his inclination and ability to find him his rightful place amoung the music greats.
