Goa's drummer boy strikes again
After experimenting with indo-jazz fusion, latino and pop music, Goa's noted percussionist Carlos Gonsalves of Mapusa is set to strike a different beat with the release of his DVD titled 'Taliking drums' next week. 'A lot of friends and well-wishers wanted to promote my music. Many people who appreciated my style of music kept asking me for a music video. Hence I decided to release 'Talking Drums', explains Carlos who has been inspired by India's renowned percussionists Sivamani and Trilok Gurtu. 'Talking Drums', which consists of seven varied percussion riffs performed by Carlos, will be available at Sinari music stores at Rs. 200/-. Carlos took up to the heartbeat of music, the drums, at the age of 13, playing the snare drum roll in his school band. he then graduated as drummer with 'Deep Red', a professional pop band in Goa. 'This band gave me the experience of performing at various events,' says Carlos. His passion rhythm then attracted him to the exciting sounds of Latin American music that made him switch over to percussion. He joined Goa's latino band 'Obligato'. 'During this time, famed musicians Lester Godinho (drummer) and Colin D'Cruz (bassist) honed my skills and i am indebted to them,' acknowledges Carlos. Carlos then went to Ireland in 2004, where he experimented with Irish folk music by jamming with bands there. he also conducted workshops on Indian rhythm and percussion. He returned to Goa in 2005, where he performed many concerts and gigs with renowned musicians including UB40's Graeme Hamilton, noted violinist harikumar, Colin D'Cruz, Lester Godinho and saxophone player Jazzy Joe. At present Carlos is a freelance musician and performs with different bands all over the country. He is scheduled to perform in Mumbai (December 18th) and Jaipur (December 21st). 'I have also setup an indo-jazz fusion band 'Shanti', where we perform concerts', says Carlos. 'Besides I have plans to release my own music in the near future'.
