Some notes for Daniel
If Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt could be inspired to make a film on his life, late journalist Daniel Pearl’s former friends and bandmates are also doing their bit to keep his memory alive. Guitarist Colin D’Cruz, who once jammed with Daniel Pearl as a part of a band named ‘Jazz Junction’, is now putting together a show on October 10 (Daniel’s birthday) with a group of musicians from Mumbai and Goa. Says D’Cruz, who was closely associated with Daniel during his two-year long stay in Mumbai, “I was once playing at this club in 1998 when I saw Daniel completely immersed in the music. We got chatting and it was then that I realised that he was an American journalist. He used to play a unique five-string violin and soon became a part of our band ‘Jazz Junction’. We used to regularly play at three jazz clubs in Mumbai.” The show - ‘Music Beyond Boundaries’ — will play out at Soul Fry Casa. Adds Colin, “Daniel was really fascinated by the live jazz scene in Mumbai. He once told me that journalism fed his passion for music. His house in Malabar Hill, where he lived with his wife Marianne, was a mini-studio for our jam sessions. An entire wall in the house was filled with music CDs.” Daniel’s unfortunate demise in Pakistan some years later is something his friends and family still haven’t completely come to terms with. “He was a very simple, nice guy. We could have never imagined he would be killed. Today, his family propagates the message of tolerance through his passion for music,” says Colin. By Divya Unny |
