The Mighty Hearts
Colin D'Cruz first met Daniel Pearl in the late 1900's at Bandra restaurant Soul Fry. Pearl was in the audience while D'Cruz and his band 'Jazz Junction' were performing at the establishment's weekly Wednesday jazz night. "He was sitting alone at the bar," said fretless bassplayer D'Cruz. "I thought he must have been a musician because he was completely into the music." It turned out that the Wall Street Journal correspondent was an enthusiastic musician. Pearl was a trained violin player and after D'Cruz introduced himself during the break, they exchanged business cards and promised to meet again when Pearl, who was then posted in Paris, returned to Mumbai. When Pearl moved here in 2000, he invited D'Cruz to his Malabar Hill apartment. "One room was full of musical instruments, one room was full of studio equipment and one was full of CD's," said D'Cruz. "He told me that he worked as a journalist so he could fund his love for music." Soon after, D'Cruz invited Pearl to play his unique five stringed violin with Jazz Junction at venues such as Soul Fry, Liquid Lounge and Starters & More. For the past five years, D'Cruz and Meldan D'Cunha the owner of Soul Fry, have been honouring Pearl, who was kidnapped and murdered in Karachi in 2002, with an annual concert on his birth anniversary, October 10. This year, the concert shifts from Bandra to Soul Fry's South Mumbai branch, Soul Fry Casa, and will feature more that 25 musicians jamming along with the Mighty Hearts the house band comprising D'Cruz, keyboardist Jarvis Menezes and drummer Ian Enthiado who are also part of the Bassman's Band, the group D'Cruz leads at the Taj Lands End hotel. "We're planning on having an open jam session, " said D'Cruz. The Mighty hearts, who take their name from Pearl's widow Mariane's memoir, will be joined onstage by a host of veterans from the city's jazz and pop gig circuit.
