Baltic Dry Index Chart

Baltic Dry Index is a measure of how much it costs to ship raw materials like iron ore, steel, cement, and so on.

Investors follow BDI as it is a leading indicator that provides a clear view into the global demand for commodities and raw materials. Some economic indicators like unemployment rates, inflation indexes, and oil prices are difficult to interpret because they can be manipulated by governments and other speculators.

As the BDI increases, the cost of raw materials also gets increased. When the index values increase, the shipowners win and the consumer lose. When the index value decreases, consumer wins and the shipowners lose. The BDI takes into account 23 shipping routes measured on a time charter basis.
