Make sure you don't take it into the DOT office. I did this once to a plate I found. I wanted them to run the plate number to find out who's it was so I could get it back to them. They took the plate and tossed it into a box on the floor. I later found out they don't even try to return the plates.

I guess that's your tax dollars at work; lol.
