This hunt was about 7 or 8 years in the making. All that time ago I asked the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to open up a daylight hours foxhound field trial season on the Blue Spring Wildlife Management Area in the Conecuh National Forest. Previously there had been nighttime fox running allowed from September 1st to Feb 28th except on a few special days, but there wasn't a daylight hours season. They agreed to give us September 1st to October 14th as a daylight hours season for field trials. We held a 1 day S&D "camp" hunt that first year and everything went well (except that Scott Head won and we also got a lecture from the Forest Service officer about blocking the roads). Since then my schedule had not allowed time to organize a 3-day field trial. Finally, this year we were able to get it done. The ALDCNR (both enforcement and biologists) were happy to issue the field trial permit. We had a near perfect field trial with very little problem from the state and federal officials or the local land owners. For three solid days I could drive to any corner of the hunting grounds and get out of the truck and hear hounds running. The hounds struck and started running each day within about 5 minutes of cast (and this is without any "improvements" made to the running grounds). Several pieces of game were run to ground. At least one coyote was not fast enough for the hounds. Several deer were also run. I personally never saw a deer until the last day of the hunt. There are so many coyotes in the area it is easy to have running all day and never get off on a deer.
Honorable mention for the hunt goes to several outstanding hounds that were within one crossing of winning the hunt. Hound #50 was a real crowd pleaser. I had to help get him out of a fox hole on the second day when he and a few more hounds ran one to ground in less than 20 minutes. On the first day I am told this same hound swam the length of Blue Lake running a deer. Spectators say the hound was barking the whole way across the lake.
Hound #25 was also a superstar. This hound was not only a Hunting machine but also is a very tough customer. He sustained a deep cut on his back leg during the second days running. I'm told the hound had a disagreement with a 300 pound feral hog. He competed strong the last day even with the injury and was scored well in the last hour of the hunt.
Hound #21 was a consistent hound that put up good numbers all three days and seemed to be in the running all the time.
Hound #691 was probably responsible for starting more races than any other hound in the hunt. He was observed looking for, finding, and running game all over the hunting grounds.
Hound #3 was seen dominating a coyote race on the third day and put up 350 points doing so.
I would like to thank Mrs. Sylvia Tribble for cooking for us. It is a rare skill to be able to cook large volumes of food and still have it taste so good. Nobody is more pleasant to be around than Mrs. Sylvia. Also, thanks to our judges, Jimmy Adams, Jay Howell, myself, Billy, Johnson, Moose Jowers, Hilliard Courtney, Van Stinson, Denzil Stinson, and Troy Stinson. Custom Collars and Pride dog food also gave generous donations for our winners and Showtime provided feed to use during the hunt. Hopefully we can do it again next year. I was pretty optimistic about the hunt and it turned out to be even better than I expected.
